Dot's Good Deals land to be auctioned off

Woolwich selectmen decided to take no action Monday on having rubble left by a March 30 fire removed from the site of Dot's Good Deals. According to a public notice, the property will be auctioned off on July 23 at 10 a.m. at the Portland law office of Drummond & Drummond.
The auction is being brought by Nationstar Mortgage LLC against Dorothy Schmidt for the foreclosure of the mortgage on the property. A sixty-day notice to clean the site has been issued by the town to both Schmidt and the mortgage company.
Although the selectmen requested and received a bid from Pine Tree Waste to remove the rubble from the site for a cost of $11,675, the selectmen decided to wait and see what happens at the auction.
The public notice of the sale says, "The property is being sold as is where is and without recourse" and "no representations are made as to the condition of the property."
The selectmen have asked the town's new Code Enforcement Officer, Bruce Engert, to attend the auction to look out for the town's interest.
The selectmen want to ensure the debris, created by the fire, doesn't become a hazard, and an expense to the taxpayers to have it removed. It should be taken care of by the mortgage company or by the new owner, according to the selectmen, not the town.
Dot's son, Henry P. Schmidt, was indicted by the Sagadahoc Grand Jury after it was determined that it was set. If he is convicted of arson, a Class A Felony, he could face up to 30 years in prison. |
