How Should State Surplus Be Used?

Senator Marge Kilkelly (D-Wiscasset) has called the newly reprojected budget surplus good news for Maine's citizens, and asked for citizens' input on best use of the funds.

On Nov. 16, the Maine Revenue Forecasting Committee tentatively increased its revenue forecasts for the current biennium (fiscal years 2000 and 2001) by $250 million. The new revenue projections will not become official until the committee's next meeting, and could ultimately be even higher.

"This wonderful news reflects the continued strength of the local and national economies," said Kilkelly. "Now, lawmakers must use these funds in a fiscally responsible way that will build a better future for all Maine residents, and is fair to taxpayers."

Senator Kilkelly, who will be returning to Maine on Dec. 15 after a two-month stay in Central Europe on an Eisenhower Fellowship, has continued to be updated on current state issues in preparation for the legislative session beginning Jan. 5. The Wiscasset senator is seeking input from her constituents regarding the best use of these funds and invites them to contact her with their thoughts or suggestions on this issue.

"Legislators sought public input when we had a smaller surplus two years ago," said Kilkelly, "and your comments helped us shape a responsible plan which included investment in education, paying our bills, and sustainable tax cuts. I look forward to hearing from the members of my community about how to best take advantage of this opportunity."

Comments or suggestions may be sent to Senator Marge Kilkelly, PO Box 80, West Alna Road, Wiscasset, ME 04578 or by e-mail, Kilkelly@wiscasset.net.
